FIFA is preparing for a significant debate regarding the future of the World Cup format. President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that the prospect of expanding the tournament to 64 teams will be on the agenda following the conclusion of the 2026 edition.

Speaking to Swiss media, Infantino emphasized that the goal is to further expand the tournament's reach and provide opportunities for smaller football associations. He argued that allowing more nations to qualify is essential for the continued development of the sport globally.

The proposed structure suggests 16 groups of four teams, with the top two progressing to the knockout stages. This change would eliminate the logistical complexities of ranking third-placed teams, though the number of opening-round matches would increase to 96.

The initiative is being driven by CONMEBOL, which aims to implement the change in time for the 2030 centenary World Cup. However, the proposal faces strong opposition from UEFA, as well as the Asian and North American confederations, citing concerns over the already packed international football calendar.
