Fernando Roig is celebrating a significant milestone: 30 years as president of Villarreal. During this time, the club from a town of just 52,000 residents has established itself as a permanent fixture in the Spanish elite and a respected name in European football.
The highlight of Roig's tenure was undoubtedly the 2021 Europa League title, achieved after a dramatic penalty shootout against Manchester United. Roig views this success as the culmination of a long-term project built on financial stability and a deep commitment to youth development.
Reflecting on the club's management, Roig noted the importance of continuity: "One of our key strengths is that we have known for decades who is in charge of decision-making. First it was Font de Mora, then it was me, and now it is Fernando Roig Negueroles, who represents the present and the future of the club."
The club has invested heavily in infrastructure, including two training centers with 17 pitches, which serve as the backbone for their academy. This focus on nurturing local talent has produced several world-class players who have gone on to achieve success at the highest levels.
Throughout his 30-year journey, Roig has navigated highs and lows, including several relegations and subsequent promotions, as well as multiple Champions League semi-final runs. He highlights the 2022 victory in Munich as a pivotal moment that proved the club's staying power on the European stage.
