Former France international Emmanuel Petit has voiced concerns over the current situation of goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier at PSG. After losing his place in the starting lineup to Matvey Safonov, Chevalier has been told by Petit that a departure is necessary to save his professional career.
Chevalier arrived in Paris with expectations of succeeding Gianluigi Donnarumma but has failed to cement the number-one spot. Manager Luis Enrique has placed his confidence in Safonov, leaving the French shot-stopper sidelined and struggling to regain any momentum.
When you are a high-level athlete, you are a competitor and you want to play. You cannot be satisfied with being a backup for life. The pressure was too great for him; he had not prepared himself mentally to face the challenges of PSG. Emmanuel Petit
Petit pointed out that this lack of playing time has already cost Chevalier his spot in the France national team. The 1998 World Cup winner insists that there is no clear path back into the starting eleven under Enrique, as the manager remains firmly committed to Safonov.
The current situation appears increasingly stagnant for the goalkeeper. Petit argues that Chevalier must leave the club to reclaim control over his professional future, warning that further time on the sidelines could severely hinder his development during a critical stage of his career.
