19-year-old academy product Derek Jiménez made his professional debut for América in their victory against Necaxa.
América's victory against Necaxa was marked by a milestone for the club's youth academy, as 19-year-old midfielder Derek Jiménez officially made his debut for the first team. He entered the pitch in the 82nd minute, replacing Alejandro Zendejas.
For the Jalisco native, this moment was the culmination of a long journey within the club's ranks. Jiménez joined América's youth system at 14 and progressed through every level before finally receiving his opportunity at the professional level.
Head coach Guillermo Almada continues to demonstrate his commitment to youth development. Since taking charge, the Uruguayan manager has given playing time to seven players aged 23 or younger. Jiménez is the latest to break through, following in the footsteps of other young talents like Alejandro Cárdenas, Diego Arriaga, and Dagoberto Espinoza, who have also received minutes under the current coaching staff.
In the current Apertura 2026 tournament, Jiménez had already made a strong impression with the U-21 side, scoring two goals in nine matches. Notably, both goals were decisive in securing victories for América in the derby against Cruz Azul, a factor that preceded his promotion to the main squad.
