Mexx Meerdink hits brace on full debut for Netherlands

Forward Mexx Meerdink enjoyed a dream full international debut for the Netherlands, scoring both goals in a 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory against Serbia at the Rajko Mitic Stadium. The win marks the first points of the campaign for the Dutch side.

Handed a starting spot by head coach Xavi Hernández due to an injury to Brian Brobbey, Meerdink opened the scoring with a coolly dispatched penalty after Crysencio Summerville was fouled. Although Luka Jović leveled for the hosts early in the second half, Meerdink secured the victory in the 78th minute by converting a pass from Guus Til with a clinical finish.

Manager Xavi Hernández praised the young forward not only for his clinical edge but also for his relentless defensive work rate and pressing. Xavi confirmed that Meerdink is now the designated second-choice penalty taker behind Cody Gakpo.
