Spain experienced a night of frustration at the 2026 World Cup, held to a goalless draw by a resilient Cape Verde side. Despite controlling possession, the European champions struggled to break down a deep defensive block, failing to convert several clear-cut chances.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente insisted that the result was simply a matter of bad luck rather than a failure of tactics.
The ball didn't want to go in. We have generated arrivals, but when the ball doesn't want to go in, it doesn't want to go in, — De la Fuente said after the match.
The manager praised Cape Verde's disciplined defensive display, noting that it is always difficult to find spaces against such an organized low block. He admitted that his team lacked the necessary freshness to solve the game early, as echoed by midfielder Rodri.
Regarding the benching of teenage sensations Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, the coach clarified that their limited involvement was part of a managed return following recent injury concerns.
The objective is to give them minutes, so that they acquire confidence and rhythm so that in future commitments they are better, — he explained, promising a larger role for them as the group stage progresses.
Spain now faces significant pressure heading into their second group fixture against Saudi Arabia. With only one point from their opener, anything less than a win could put their knockout round aspirations in jeopardy.
