Craig Bellamy says Wales must be better after Romania woe
Head coach Craig Bellamy says Wales need to significantly improve following their 2-1 friendly defeat by Romania in Bucharest.
Following a 2-1 loss to Romania in Bucharest, Wales head coach Craig Bellamy has been blunt about his team's need for improvement. The result marked Gheorghe Hagi's first victory as Romania manager, while Wales extended their winless streak in away friendlies dating back to 2008.
We need to be better. There were some good bits, but there were some negatives as well. I felt we didn't create the opportunity enough to get into the final third and create consistent chances. Craig Bellamy
Bellamy expressed frustration at the team's tendency to build up too deep, noting that they failed to break lines or attack the opposition defense with enough regularity. Despite holding 57% of possession, key players including Ethan Ampadu, Brennan Johnson, and substitute Lewis Koumas were unable to capitalize on the chances created.
Wales have now gone four matches in 2026 without a win, their last victory being a 7-1 triumph over North Macedonia in November. Goalscorer David Brooks echoed his manager's sentiments, stating that the team must be "miles better" when they return to competitive action in the Nations League A later this year.
