The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has imposed a registration embargo on Cove Rangers that will remain in effect until 31 May 2027. The Scottish League 1 club admitted to breaching league rules regarding player remuneration.
According to the league, Cove Rangers failed to make a contractually required payment to a player and neglected to notify the SPFL about the default. Furthermore, the club provided incorrect information to the league when certifying that they had no overdue payables to players or former players as of 31 January 2026.
As part of the sanctions, the club was fined £5,000, with £2,000 of that total suspended. The SPFL confirmed that the club has since settled the outstanding payment to the player involved.
The restriction comes at a difficult time for manager Paul Hartley, as his side currently sits second from bottom in League 1, holding a narrow one-point lead over Queen of the South after eight matches.
