Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has reacted to 16-year-old midfielder Max Dowman's red card during the League Cup match against Fleetwood. The youngster was sent off in the 86th minute after retaliating to a heavy challenge.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Fleetwood eventually winning 5-3 on penalties.
We are not in Disneyland, we are in the Premier League at this level. You have to understand the context and the relationship I have with him. When I don't win, do you know what my reaction is? I am angry. We have to be prepared for that — that is the environment and the reality. Mikel Arteta
The Spanish coach assured that the club continues to support Dowman, but insisted that no exceptions will be made regarding his development. Arteta emphasized that young talents must meet the same rigorous professional requirements as the rest of the squad.
He concluded that while the club cares about the midfielder's progress, he must earn his right to play through discipline and performance.
