Since being appointed head coach on a permanent basis in January 2025, Renee Slegers has been aggressively reshaping the Arsenal squad. This summer has served as a pivotal moment for change, with expiring contracts providing the ideal opportunity for the club to implement a new vision centered on reducing the average age of the group.
Last season, the Gunners possessed one of the oldest squads in the WSL. The departure of several long-serving players, including Katie McCabe, Beth Mead, and Manuela Zinsberger, has allowed the club to refresh the roster. In their place, the arrival of 27-year-olds like Georgia Stanway, Ona Batlle, and Geraldine Reuteler represents a strategic move to infuse the team with energy and peak-performance quality.
Beyond youth, the recruitment drive is aimed at fixing the lack of depth that plagued the team last year. Slegers often struggled with limited options due to injuries and personal leave, leading to an over-reliance on stars like Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey. The additions of Stanway and Reuteler are expected to share the midfield load and provide much-needed rotation, ensuring the team remains competitive across all competitions.
The offensive variety has also been bolstered. By adding versatile players like Reuteler, Selina Cerci, and the tactical flexibility of Ona Batlle—who arrives from reigning European champions Barcelona—the Gunners are becoming a less predictable attacking force. These high-profile signings, combined with a timely integration into pre-season, send a clear message that Arsenal is determined to secure its first WSL title since 2019.
