América's international trophy drought hits the 10-year mark
Following a disappointing performance in the 2026 Leagues Cup, Club América officially marks a decade without an international championship.
América has failed once again to break its long-standing international trophy drought. Following losses to Monterrey in the semifinals and León in the third-place match of the 2026 Leagues Cup, the team concluded the tournament empty-handed, extending their wait for an international title to 10 years.
Since winning the CONCACAF Champions League in 2016, the "Águilas" have competed in 12 international tournaments but reached the final only once. This current slump is a continuation of difficulties that began after their participation in the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup.
Over the last decade, the team has repeatedly stalled in the semifinals or quarterfinals of CONCACAF competitions, falling to opponents such as Toronto FC, LAFC, and Pachuca. Their closest opportunity to end the streak came in 2021, when they reached the CONCACAF Champions League final but were defeated by Monterrey.
The Leagues Cup has also failed to provide a solution for the Mexican giants. Since the official tournament's inception in 2023, the club has had four opportunities to claim the title but has yet to succeed. Despite their status as the historical leaders in CONCACAF titles, the team is currently struggling to translate that legacy into actual results on the pitch.
