Forward Danny Welbeck is gearing up for a swift reunion with his former employers as Chelsea prepare to host Brighton in the Premier League. The 35-year-old spent six years with the Seagulls before completing a move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
During his time on the south coast, Welbeck was a consistent threat to Chelsea, netting six goals and providing two assists in nine top-flight meetings with the Blues. He recently showcased his form by scoring on his Chelsea debut during Thursday's Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town.
Manager Xabi Alonso expressed his delight at having the experienced forward available. He noted that Welbeck’s intelligence and ability to link play have been immediate assets to the squad.
I am aware [of his record in the fixture] and I am happy he is with us! He has many qualities. As a player, you see how intelligent he is, and he links well. Out of the box, he is able to combine, and in the box he is very intelligent to be in the right place. Xabi Alonso
Alonso also highlighted Welbeck’s contributions off the pitch, noting that he, alongside Jordan Henderson, has brought crucial leadership to the dressing room. According to the manager, Welbeck’s dedication in training is setting a high standard for the entire squad.
While it remains to be seen if Welbeck will feature against his former side on Sunday, his recent performance suggests he is ready to compete. Following the Brighton test, Chelsea will immediately shift their focus to next week's London derby against Arsenal.
