Authorities in Atlanta have announced enhanced security measures for Wednesday's World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina. The match renews one of international football's most storied rivalries, with England aiming to reach their first World Cup final since 1966.
The Atlanta Police Department acknowledged the historical context between the two nations, which dates back to the 1982 Falklands War. In an official statement, the police confirmed that additional personnel and resources are being deployed in and around event venues and entertainment districts to ensure a safe experience for all visitors.
Sporting passion must remain football. We consider it essential to draw a clear and unwavering line between sporting passion and the national cause. 2 April War Veterans Federation
Ahead of the first World Cup meeting between the sides in 24 years, an Argentine war veterans federation has urged supporters to focus on the sport rather than politics. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford echoed these sentiments, stating that it is simply a game of football and that the focus should remain on the action on the pitch.
Police have also issued a reminder to fans back in the UK to maintain order, following over 500 football-related incidents during the weekend of England's quarter-final victory over Norway. Authorities hope the proactive measures in Atlanta will prevent any issues during this historic clash.
