England delivered a standout performance in their 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup last 16, but the triumph at the Azteca Stadium has left Thomas Tuchel’s side facing a disciplinary headache. Four key players are now walking a tightrope, risking suspension for a potential semi-final in Atlanta on 15 July.
Marc Guehi, Nico O'Reilly, and Declan Rice all picked up bookings during the win, joining Jude Bellingham, who was cautioned earlier in the last 32 against DR Congo. Jordan Henderson was also cautioned, though his tournament may be over regardless due to a wrist injury sustained during the post-match celebrations.
Under FIFA regulations, bookings from the group stage were wiped clean before the knockout rounds. However, a new disciplinary threshold applies: any player who receives two yellow cards across the last 32, last 16, and quarter-finals will face an automatic one-match ban. These cards only reset after the quarter-final stage, meaning players must tread carefully to reach the semi-finals.
The threat extends beyond the England camp. Stars from France, Spain, Morocco, Argentina, and Switzerland are also navigating similar disciplinary risks. Notably, Spain’s Ferran Torres, Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, and Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka are among those who could be sidelined if cautioned in their next outings. England's quarter-final opponents, Norway, also have winger Antonio Nusa at risk of missing a potential semi-final.
