In his first official match as manager, Andoni Iraola saw his Liverpool side salvage a hard-fought 2-2 draw away at Newcastle on the opening weekend of the Premier League. Despite dominating the offensive statistics with 27 shots, Liverpool found themselves trailing twice at St James' Park.

Newcastle struck early in the 5th minute through Anthony Elanga, who finished a swift counter-attack. Liverpool eventually found an equalizer after the break when Cody Gakpo hammered a long-range strike into the net in the 55th minute. However, the parity was short-lived, as Joe Willock restored the home side's lead just two minutes later with a curling shot from the edge of the box.

The drama peaked in the dying seconds of stoppage time. A foul by Lewis Hall on Victor Munoz inside the penalty area gave Liverpool a final lifeline. Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up and expertly converted the spot-kick, firing into the top right corner to secure a point for the visitors.
