Sunderland have reached an agreement with Lyon for the transfer of winger Malick Fofana. The deal is valued at just under £30 million.
The 21-year-old Belgium international is currently travelling to England to undergo a medical examination. He is expected to sign a five-year deal with the club. The transfer consists of an initial £25.6m fee, with an additional £4.3m in potential add-ons.
Fofana, who began his career at KAA Gent before moving to Ligue 1 in 2024, was a target for Arsenal earlier in the window, but the Premier League champions could not strike a deal with the French side.
The forward is reportedly eager to join the Black Cats ahead of their upcoming European campaign. After finishing seventh in the Premier League last season, Sunderland qualified for the Europa League, marking their return to continental competition after 51 years.
This move follows a busy summer for Sunderland, who have already added Thomas Meunier, Dayann Methalie, and Jules Ahoka to their squad. Furthermore, the club is set to bring in Tottenham defender Kevin Danso on an initial loan with an option to buy.
