Sebastian Berhalter finalizing transfer to Middlesbrough from Vancouver

U.S. national team midfielder Sebastian Berhalter is finalizing a move from Vancouver Whitecaps to English Championship side Middlesbrough. Sources confirm that the deal is expected to be completed for a fee in the region of $2 million.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who was set to be out of contract this winter, attracted serious interest from 6–10 clubs this summer. To facilitate the advanced negotiations, he was held out of the Whitecaps' recent match against FC Cincinnati.
Berhalter has enjoyed a rapid rise in MLS, earning Best XI honors in 2025 and All-Star recognition in 2026. His consistent performances as a box-to-box midfielder helped lead Vancouver to a Canadian Championship title and deep runs in the MLS Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup. On the international stage, he featured in all five U.S. matches at this summer's World Cup, scoring against Turkey.
At Middlesbrough, Berhalter will reunite with close friend and former Columbus Crew teammate Aidan Morris. The move marks a significant step for Berhalter, who originally joined Vancouver for a nominal fee of $50,000 before developing into an elite league talent.
