Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman has finalised his squad for the upcoming World Cup, with Liverpool's Jeremie Frimpong notably absent from the selection. Koeman cited a combination of recurring injury issues and specific tactical preferences for the wing-back position.
Instead of Frimpong, Koeman has opted for Crysencio Summerville. The manager praised the West Ham player's reliability and exceptional work ethic, noting that he had been monitoring the winger since March.
It’s true that he’s been injured quite often this season. That’s a physical issue, but I’ve also chosen someone else to play on the right wing: Summerville. That comes as no surprise to me, as I wanted to call him up back in March. I like that sort of player who is reliable on the pitch. Ronald Koeman
The Dutch midfield remains a concern following long-term ACL injuries to Xavi Simons and Jerdy Schouten. Koeman resisted calling up young prospects like Kees Smit and Luciano Valente, insisting that the squad required the defensive stability offered by more established players like Marten de Roon.
Fitness remains a major theme for the camp, with Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber currently the biggest doubt. While included in the 26-man list, his participation in the Champions League final and the World Cup itself is uncertain. Ian Maatsen and Lutsharel Geertruida are on standby as potential replacements.
On a more positive note, Bournemouth's Justin Kluivert has been recalled following his recovery from surgery. The Oranje will fine-tune their preparations with warm-up matches against Algeria and Uzbekistan before kicking off their World Cup campaign against Japan on June 14.
