Roberto Martinez in talks for Netherlands manager role
The KNVB has held talks with Roberto Martinez as they consider appointing a foreign manager for the first time since 1978.

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has opened negotiations with Roberto Martinez regarding the vacant head coach position for the national team. According to De Telegraaf, KNVB technical director Nigel de Jong held face-to-face talks with the 53-year-old Spanish coach in Malaga.
An appointment would mark a significant shift in policy, as the Netherlands has exclusively employed domestic managers for the last 48 years. The last non-Dutch coach was the Austrian Ernst Happel, who led the Oranje to the 1978 World Cup final. Despite his Spanish roots, Martinez is viewed by the KNVB as a candidate with a strong understanding of the Dutch football philosophy pioneered by Johan Cruijff.
The search follows the withdrawal of several prominent Dutch candidates, including Peter Bosz, Arne Slot, and Erik ten Hag. Arne Slot, who was linked to the role, clarified his decision to step away: "At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team."
The federation has also explored internal options, including an exploratory meeting with current Jong Oranje coach Michael Reiziger. However, there has been no follow-up discussion. Meanwhile, despite fan support for a fourth stint, the KNVB has not contacted Louis van Gaal regarding the vacancy.
