England international Ivan Toney has formally entered a not guilty plea regarding an assault charge during a hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court. The case stems from an alleged incident at a venue in Soho, London, which reportedly took place in December of last year.
During the 10-minute hearing, the prosecution outlined allegations that Toney was involved in a confrontation at 100 Wardour Street, where it is claimed the striker lunged at and headbutted the complainant before throwing punches. A spokesperson for the player stated that while Toney is shocked by the criminal charges, he is committed to the opportunity to clear his name in court.
Although the presiding judge indicated the case was suitable for the magistrates' court system, Toney exercised his right to request a trial by jury. Consequently, the case will be heard at Southwark Crown Court.
Toney was granted unconditional bail and will remain free to continue his professional duties with his club in the Saudi Pro League while awaiting the next legal stage. The proceedings are currently scheduled to resume on October 29.
