Nico Williams withdraws from Spain squad with thigh injury
Athletic Club winger Nico Williams has left the Spain national team camp to undergo recovery for a left thigh injury.
Athletic Club winger Nico Williams has been forced to withdraw from the Spain national team camp. The 22-year-old sustained a muscular injury in his left thigh, which has ruled him out of the upcoming international fixtures.
The issue surfaced following Spain's recent Nations League clash against Croatia in Seville. Despite efforts to manage the injury during the squad's rest period, the persistent pain prevented Williams from participating in training, leading medical staff to authorize his return to his club for specialized rehabilitation under the supervision of Athletic Club staff.
The loss is a notable setback for head coach Luis de la Fuente, who has relied on the winger's explosive pace. Williams played a significant role in Spain's strong start to the Nations League campaign, featuring in the 3-2 victory over England and scoring in the 4-1 win against Croatia.
Spain currently sits at the top of League A Group 3 with six points from two matches. However, the squad is facing an injury crisis, with Williams becoming the third player to withdraw during this international window, following Eric Garcia and Alejandro Grimaldo.
