Lionel Messi climbs to second place in all-time free-kick goals list
After netting two free-kicks against Montreal, Lionel Messi has moved into second place on the all-time list of most goals scored from free-kicks.
Lionel Messi continues to cement his legacy. Following his performance in Inter Miami's 7-1 victory over CF Montreal in MLS action, the Argentine superstar has reached a new historical milestone by climbing the rankings of all-time free-kick scorers.
Messi converted two free-kicks during the match. The first arrived in the 40th minute, aided by a deflection, while the second was a precise strike into the bottom corner in the 90+6th minute. These goals brought his total tally to 74 career free-kick goals.
With this achievement, Messi has surpassed the legendary Brazilian specialist Juninho Pernambucano, who recorded 72 goals from dead-ball situations. Messi is now tied for second place in history with Brazilian Jair Rosa Pinto.
The historical table, maintained by researchers and journalists, places Brazilian Marcelinho Carioca at the top with 78 free-kick goals. Messi currently sits just four goals behind the record, aiming to become the undisputed leader in this statistical category.
