Following Tottenham's 1-0 defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road, manager Roberto De Zerbi offered a surprisingly composed reaction. Many expected the Italian to vent frustration at referee John Brooks, particularly regarding the decision not to send off Jayden Bogle for a heavy challenge on Mathys Tel during the first half.
The incident occurred while the game was goalless and Tottenham appeared to have control. Following a four-minute VAR review, no further action was taken, but Tel was forced off with a foot injury. Former official Darren McCann noted that Bogle was fortunate to avoid a red card, as the challenge endangered the safety of an opponent.
However, De Zerbi refused to use the refereeing decision as an excuse for the result. "We deserved to lose the game in the second half and didn't play like we can," he told reporters. "It's a journey for us because we can learn from this game. I am sorry for the performance in the second half — we didn't play like a top team. We didn't have the right character and physicality."
The match sparked significant debate, particularly because Brooks did not review the incident on the pitchside monitor. While De Zerbi maintained he has "full confidence" in the officials, he did express surprise at a later yellow card shown to Pedro Porro. For now, the focus shifts to how Tottenham responds to their first league defeat since September.
