Liverpool have intensified their efforts to plan for a future defensive rebuild, as uncertainty continues to surround the long-term futures of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

Borussia Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck has emerged as a leading name on Liverpool's shortlist. Despite signing a new deal earlier this year, he remains a target for top clubs. His contract runs until 2031, with a release clause reportedly active from 2027 between 50 and 60 million euros. A deal before that timeframe would likely require a fee exceeding 70 million euros.

Liverpool are also tracking Nottingham Forest defender Murillo. The 24-year-old Brazilian offers the advantage of existing Premier League experience, possessing the recovery pace and physicality needed for modern defensive systems. His ability to carry the ball forward has made him a compelling option for the club.

Both players fit Liverpool's strategic profile but offer different qualities. Schlotterbeck is seen as the more natural successor to Van Dijk due to his left-footed passing range and established leadership experience. Murillo, however, provides the relentless tempo adaptation that reduces the risk for a club looking to integrate a new centre-back immediately.

For now, no official bids have been submitted. Liverpool are currently monitoring performances and assessing the financial viability of both deals. Nottingham Forest feel little pressure to sell, which may force the Reds into a substantial financial commitment if they decide to pursue the Brazilian.
