England midfielder Jordan Henderson has undergone surgery following a serious arm injury sustained while celebrating the team's dramatic 3-2 World Cup victory over Mexico. The injury occurred when Henderson, who was an unused substitute, was clambering over stadium hoardings at the Azteca Stadium following the final whistle.
Henderson required medical attention, including oxygen, before being stretchered off and transported to a local hospital. Manager Thomas Tuchel admitted that while he was immensely proud of his players' resilience, the incident cast a significant shadow over the team's quarter-final qualification.
Hendo's a good man, he's in a better place than he was yesterday. It was obviously scary for him and his family and for everyone else, but we're just glad that he's on the road to a speedy recovery. Marc Guehi
Although Henderson will play no further part on the pitch, he is set to remain with the squad to provide moral support for his teammates. The timeline for his recovery remains uncertain, but he has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.
England must now refocus as they prepare for a high-stakes quarter-final showdown against Norway in Miami this Saturday. The match will see several Premier League stars face off, including a duel between English defenders and Norwegian striker Erling Haaland.
