Ilkay Gündogan considers spectacular return to Nürnberg and potential Guardiola reunion

Galatasaray midfielder Ilkay Gündogan has hinted at a potential return to his former club, Nürnberg, as he begins to weigh up his future beyond his playing days. The 35-year-old, who made his professional breakthrough in Nuremberg before rising to prominence, remains deeply connected to the city and the club.

"Of course I can imagine returning one day, in whatever role," Gündogan told Sky. "Whether that is one or two years as a player, or as an official or coach. Anything is possible."

While he maintains great respect for the second division, Gündogan admitted he is currently not eager to drop down to that level, citing his comfort playing for a club involved in the Champions League. He is currently contracted with the Turkish side until 2027 and remains focused on his performances in Istanbul for the time being.

Beyond a return to Germany, Gündogan is also considering a potential partnership with his long-time mentor, Pep Guardiola. The midfielder confirmed that the idea of joining Guardiola's coaching staff has been discussed previously.
