Fire aim to claim their place in Chicago’s sporting soul
Sporting director Gregg Broughton is looking to build a distinct identity for the Chicago Fire, drawing on his successful experience with Bodo/Glimt.
The Chicago Fire are striving to become a fundamental part of the sporting identity in Chicago, a city renowned for its deep-rooted passion for teams like the Cubs and the Bears. Sporting director Gregg Broughton is leading the charge to integrate the club more firmly into the city's rich sporting tapestry.
A major component of this strategy is the construction of a new 22,000-capacity stadium, McDonald’s Park, in downtown Chicago. Broughton, who previously oversaw the remarkable rise of Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt, believes that a smaller, purpose-built venue will help create a more intense match-day atmosphere and drive ticket demand.
Drawing on his time in Norway, where he helped transform a club into a domestic powerhouse through a clear 4-3-3 identity and aggressive recruitment, Broughton aims to instill a similar sense of purpose in Chicago. The Fire are currently performing well, sitting third in the MLS Eastern Conference with 26 points from 14 matches.
