Lucas Di Yorio out for four months after Leagues Cup injury

Santos Laguna forward Lucas Di Yorio is sidelined for several months following a dangerous incident in a Leagues Cup group stage match against Chicago Fire. During the 75th minute of the contest, Chicago Fire defender Jack Elliott lunged into a challenge that resulted in a severe injury for the Argentine player.

Although the match officials and VAR did not initially deem the challenge worthy of a red card, the damage to Di Yorio's leg was significant. The player later shared images of the injury on social media, showing a deep wound that required medical intervention.

The club has officially confirmed that Di Yorio suffered a three-centimeter deep wound, which required stitches and caused damage to his tibia. Consequently, the forward underwent surgery and is expected to be out of action for at least three to four months.

The incident has sparked widespread criticism regarding the officiating and the tournament's safety protocols. As of now, CONCACAF, the Leagues Cup organizers, and Chicago Fire have remained silent. It is anticipated that Santos Laguna and Liga MX will formally request a review of the incident to address the safety concerns raised by the challenge.
