FIFA aims to refresh its pre-match protocols for the 2026 World Cup with a focus on inclusivity. The governing body has introduced a new concept designed to involve the entire squad, rather than just the starting XI, in the pre-match proceedings.
Before kickoff, every player from both teams will assemble around the center circle for the national anthems. With squads potentially consisting of 26 players, this means up to 52 players will be gathered on the pitch simultaneously.
According to FIFA, this initiative is intended to ensure that every squad member experiences the pride of representing their nation on the world's biggest stage. The stadiums will also feature giant banners depicting national flags to enhance the visual experience for spectators regardless of their seating position.
Players and referees will create a moment of unity, pride and emotion that will belong to the teams and all spectators. Gianni Infantino, FIFA President
The ceremony is expected to evolve as the tournament progresses. FIFA plans to incorporate additional visual elements, such as colored smoke or pyrotechnics, specifically during the knockout stages of the competition.
