Rumors regarding the potential appointment of Fabien Barthez as goalkeeper coach for the France national team have brought renewed focus to his coaching background. While he lacks a traditional coaching diploma, the former goalkeeper possesses practical experience, most notably from his role as a consultant at Toulouse during the 2020-2021 season.
The concept of bringing in the legendary keeper stemmed from discussions with the club's president, Damien Comolli. Barthez aimed to develop his own goalkeeping school and brought a modern vision to the club: emphasizing that keepers should be proactive, involved in build-up play, and comfortable operating outside their penalty area.
At Toulouse, Barthez worked with the senior keepers, including Maxime Dupé, focusing heavily on the mental aspects of the position. Former head coach Patrice Garande noted that Barthez’s methods were non-academic but highly effective, as he transmitted wisdom through his own unique perspective on the game.
He brought something to everyone. I loved it. Patrice Garande
The partnership concluded in September 2021. While Barthez left a significant impact on the development of young talents, his lack of official coaching credentials (CEGB1/CEGB Pro) remains the primary point of contention regarding a potential professional role at the international level.
