Didier Deschamps has opened up about the reasons behind his decision to announce his departure from the French national team, a move he confirmed in January 2025. In an interview with M6, the coach explained that he felt the atmosphere surrounding the team had become so "unbreathable" that leaving was necessary for the good of the squad.
This decision followed a period of intense pressure that intensified after Euro 2024. The team faced criticism for its style of play, particularly against the backdrop of Kylian Mbappe's injury and the decline in form of key players like Antoine Griezmann. These sporting struggles were compounded by non-sporting factors, including the politicization of the players' public statements, which created a divide among the fanbase.
A major point of contention was also Deschamps' contract, which had been extended until 2026 back in early 2023. This created a sense of fatigue around his tenure, as there was no room for a post-summer review. Deschamps emphasized that he was not forced to leave, but felt compelled to announce his departure to restore calm and indulgence toward the French team.
