Rangers manager Derek McInnes has admitted he feels a sense of guilt regarding his departure from Hearts this past summer. The manager is preparing for his first return to Tynecastle on Wednesday, where he anticipates a frosty reception from the home supporters.
Last season, under McInnes' leadership, Hearts came within minutes of securing their first top-flight title in 66 years before missing out on the final day. McInnes stated he remains proud of the work achieved in Edinburgh and believes the team remains a serious title contender under new head coach Wouter Vrancken.
I would have hoped that you get on to the pitch and clap the fans and there's an acknowledgement both ways, but that's not going to happen. I totally understand it, though. I loved my time at Hearts. It was only a short time, but I thought my Hearts team were a breath of fresh air for Scottish football last season. Derek McInnes
McInnes drew parallels to his own feelings when captain Lawrence Shankland announced his move to Ibrox shortly before his own departure. Having experienced that disappointment himself, he admitted he understands why the Hearts fanbase would feel let down by his decision to leave.
Despite expecting a difficult atmosphere on Wednesday, McInnes insisted he has no regrets about his time at the club. He noted that the team's performance last season—reaching 80 points—was a significant achievement that challenged the dominance of the Old Firm, and he continues to hold the club in high regard.
