The Argentina Football Association (AFA) is planning to apply to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after Fifa rejected its appeals against sanctions imposed on the organization and midfielder Leandro Paredes.
Paredes received a 10-match ban for his involvement in on-field clashes following Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. Teammate Nahuel Molina was handed a seven-game suspension, which was later reduced to four, and both players were fined $90,000.
The AFA was fined $321,000 for breaches of the Fifa disciplinary code, including the use of a sports event for non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct, and discriminatory chants by supporters. The disciplinary action followed an incident after the semi-final against England, where players held a banner asserting sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.
In the aftermath of the final, other individuals including Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were also identified in a pitch fracas involving Spain players such as Eric Garcia and Gavi. Fifa had previously appointed a disciplinary prosecutor to assess the events before issuing the sanctions.
According to an AFA statement, the association will now request the official reasoning behind Fifa's decisions before officially taking the matter to the Lausanne-based court.
