American fan shares his lifelong passion for the World Cup

Alfonso Messina, an American of Italian descent, explains how the 1994 Brazil vs. Italy World Cup final sparked his deep love for the sport.

Alfonso Messina, a sports enthusiast from Cleveland, discovered his passion for football during the 1994 World Cup. Born in Italy but raised in the United States since age two, he recalls how the emotional weight of the tournament became clear to him during the final between Italy and Brazil.

I remember the 1990 World Cup in Italy when I was 7. But 1994 left a mark. The final was Italy vs. Brazil here in the U.S. My grandmother was crying, and I, as an 11-year-old boy, asked why. That was when I realized the importance of the World Cup. Alfonso Messina

His love for the game also stems from his father's support for AC Milan. Having attended World Cup matches in Rome in 2006 and Berlin in 2014, Messina is now planning to attend four matches during the current tournament, including Brazil's Group C opener against Morocco at MetLife Stadium.

The fan also commented on Brazil being coached by Italian tactician Carlo Ancelotti. Messina expressed optimism about the pairing, noting that he is eager to see how the combination of Brazilian flair and Italian tactical discipline plays out on the pitch.
