England's 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina at the World Cup was a devastating blow for supporters, but former captain Alan Shearer believes it is not the end of the road for Thomas Tuchel. Despite failing to deliver the promised tournament victory, Shearer insists the manager deserves the opportunity to continue his work.
Shearer was critical of Tuchel’s tactical approach, particularly the decision to defend deep after scoring and the ineffective substitutions. However, he emphasized that the German manager has the necessary experience to learn from these mistakes. He believes that the scrutiny following the defeat will not faze a coach of Tuchel's caliber.
Tuchel is experienced enough to know how the game works and that his methods will now be questioned. He deserves time to reflect and learn from this experience. Alan Shearer
With a contract extension signed in February, Tuchel is set to lead England into the 2028 European Championship, a tournament the country will co-host. Shearer expects changes to the squad, noting a lack of balance and a pressing need for a long-term successor to Harry Kane, who is approaching his 33rd birthday.
Despite the frustration of the semi-final exit, Shearer urged fans to remember the positives, specifically highlighting the victory over Mexico in the last 16 as the best team performance he has witnessed from an England side in his lifetime.
