New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has addressed questions regarding why he chose the Stamford Bridge job over a potential return to Liverpool. The 44-year-old, who was officially unveiled on Monday, stated that his decision was purely a matter of timing.
While speculation linked him to the Anfield vacancy due to his playing history at the club, Alonso emphasized that his focus is entirely on his current role. "I am here today on my first day at Stamford Bridge, talking to you. I am looking forward to this challenge, a big challenge, and Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs and I am looking forward to having success here," he told reporters.
Well, it is about timings. I am here today on my first day at Stamford Bridge, talking to you. I am looking forward to this challenge, a big challenge, and Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs and I am looking forward to having success here. Xabi Alonso
Alonso arrives as the club's sixth permanent manager in four years, but with the specific title of 'manager' rather than head coach. He expressed his commitment to working collaboratively with the sporting directors, noting that the ultimate goal is to build a cohesive squad. "We are confident that we are doing the right things in the right way. The potential is there. I think there is a strong base and a good team already there," he added.
A key focus for the new manager is unlocking the potential of Cole Palmer. After a difficult campaign that saw the club finish 10th and miss out on Europe, Alonso is eager to utilize Palmer’s talents. "He is a special player, a different class with a different quality, and if we help him by building a team around him that allows his talent to shine, we will be closer to success," Alonso concluded.
