Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has clarified the situation regarding the absence of key duo Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill during the 1-0 pre-season defeat to Juventus in Hong Kong. The manager opted to leave both players out of the matchday squad as a precautionary measure.
Alonso moved quickly to dismiss any fears of long-term injury, explaining that the pair were dealing with minor discomfort following their 80-minute appearances against Tottenham Hotspur last week.
Yes, they had a few, not injuries, discomforts. Cole with a whack and Levi as well, so no point to take today's risk and hopefully they will be fine for Saturday. Xabi Alonso
Palmer himself confirmed it was a slight issue rather than a recurrence of any previous injuries. The match also marked a significant return for Mykhailo Mudryk, who made a substitute appearance after his suspension was rescinded by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. New signing Danny Welbeck also featured for the first time.
Chelsea now shifts focus to their upcoming fixture against AC Milan in Indonesia this Saturday. Alonso will be aiming for a full recovery for his squad as the team continues to build match fitness ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
