Willy Kambwala joins Como on loan

Former Manchester United defender Willy Kambwala is set for a fresh start in Italy. The French-Congolese centre-back has agreed to a season-long loan move to Serie A club Como, departing Villarreal in search of consistent playing time after falling out of favor with manager Iñigo Pérez.

Kambwala was on the verge of joining Osasuna in Pamplona, but a late intervention from the Italian side successfully convinced the youngster to change his plans. As part of the agreement, Como will cover the defender's full salary and the amortization of his transfer fee.

The deal includes a non-mandatory purchase option set at €10 million should the club wish to sign him permanently. Kambwala originally joined Villarreal from United for €5 million, though his progress was significantly hampered by a major hamstring injury that limited his participation during the 2025–26 campaign.

Kambwala is now focusing on putting his past fitness struggles behind him. The physical defender aims to secure vital minutes in Serie A under his new coaching staff, with Como hopeful he can provide a reliable defensive boost for the remainder of the season.
