Willi Orban stays at RB Leipzig after Saudi transfer collapses

RB Leipzig captain Willi Orban is set to remain with the club despite being on the verge of a transfer to Saudi side Al-Diriyah. According to insider Florian Plettenberg, the 33-year-old defender had a two-year contract worth $15 million ready for signature.

The move was so far advanced that a team doctor from the Saudi club had already arrived in Leipzig to conduct a medical examination on Monday. However, sporting director Marcel Schafer blocked the transfer at the final stage.

The decision was prompted by squad depth concerns, specifically following an injury to Abdul Kone. The club hierarchy determined they could not afford to let their captain depart at this time.

Orban will continue his career at RB Leipzig and is expected to lead the team in the Champions League under new head coach Martin Demichelis. His current contract with the German club runs until 2027.
