During the 2026 World Cup, the Swiss flag has caught the eye of fans as the only one among European teams to deviate from the standard rectangular format. Its unique square shape remains a distinctive visual feature on the pitch.
This design carries historical significance linked to Swiss military tradition and the nation's formation. The white cross on a red background was used by soldiers of the ancient Swiss cantons for identification during medieval battles, most notably the Battle of Laupen in 1339. It eventually evolved into a symbol of unity, with the square flag being officially adopted in 1848, the same year Switzerland established its Federal Constitution.
On the sporting front, Switzerland, managed by Murat Yakin, is enjoying a historic campaign. Having reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954 after eliminating Algeria and Colombia, the Swiss team is now preparing for a major showdown against Argentina.
