Cristian Romero named new Argentina captain

Defender Cristian Romero has officially been named the new captain of the Argentina national team. The appointment follows the international retirement of long-time leaders Lionel Messi and Nicolas Otamendi.

Romero secured the leadership role ahead of other key contenders within the squad, including goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and defender Nicolas Tagliafico, who were also considered strong candidates to wear the armband.

Since making his debut in June 2021, the 28-year-old has established himself as a defensive cornerstone, recording 58 caps with four goals and two assists. He has previously led the team as captain on three occasions.

During his international career, Romero has achieved significant success, including the 2022 World Cup title and two Copa America trophies. At the club level, he recently began a new chapter, departing Tottenham in August 2026 to join Spanish side Atletico Madrid.
