Following a season that saw Chelsea fail to qualify for Europe, the future of Wesley Fofana at Stamford Bridge remains uncertain. The 25-year-old centre-back, signed for £70m in 2022, endured a difficult campaign that ended with a red card in the final match against Sunderland.

While there is no immediate internal signal that Chelsea are actively shopping the Frenchman, his status has shifted. Incoming manager Xabi Alonso will have a significant say in the squad composition, and the centre-back position is currently congested. The hierarchy is keen to add a high-quality option to partner the "untouchable" Levi Colwill, leaving Fofana's place in the starting XI no longer guaranteed.

Financial realities also play a part. To avoid booking a loss on their accounts, Chelsea would need to receive at least £30m for the defender. Fofana is not currently pushing for an exit, but he will need to impress Alonso during pre-season training, which begins at the end of the month, to reclaim his spot.

Chelsea are actively scouting the market for defensive reinforcements, with Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix reportedly on the radar. The club is also working on other areas of the pitch, with multiple sources suggesting a deal for Strasbourg's Valentin Barco is nearing completion.
