In an official statement, the players' union labeled the events as "reprehensible and unacceptable," confirming that the severity of the aggression resulted in one player suffering significant injuries. The MUFP's stance is firm: official activity will not resume "until there are effective guarantees" ensuring that professionals can work in a safe environment.
The trigger for the crisis occurred after the final whistle of the Rentistas vs. Cerrito match, which ended in a 0-0 draw. Tension had been building throughout the game due to a controversial disallowed goal, which finally unleashed the violent altercations once the match concluded. Meanwhile, the board of Rentistas issued a public statement announcing they will file a formal complaint against the officiating crew led by Bruno Sacarelo and assistant Daniel Rodríguez, accusing them of bias that directly affected the match result.
The general suspension has forced the postponement of Sunday's matches for the sixth round of the Primera División's Torneo Intermedio, including games featuring teams like Danubio, Liverpool, and Defensor Sporting. New dates for these fixtures will be determined by the relevant authorities in due course.
