Thomas Meunier joins Sunderland on free transfer

Sunderland have completed their first summer signing by securing the services of experienced defender Thomas Meunier. The 34-year-old joins the club on a two-year contract as a free agent after his deal with Lille came to an end.

This move continues a trend for the Belgian international, who previously moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in 2020. With 83 caps for his country and a career spanning top European clubs, Meunier brings significant pedigree to the squad.

Boasting 43 appearances in the Champions League, Meunier offers both physical presence and attacking threat from the right flank. Within the current tactical setup, the defender is expected to provide competition for Trai Hume, while also offering the versatility to allow Nordi Mukiele to shift into a central defensive role.

Meunier will now integrate into first-team training as the club prepares for the upcoming Premier League campaign. His winning mentality is expected to be a major asset as the team embarks on their anticipated Europa League journey this season.
