Steve McManaman challenges Dominik Szoboszlai to lead Liverpool's new era
Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman has urged new vice-captain Dominik Szoboszlai to step up as a central leadership figure following recent squad departures.
Dominik Szoboszlai has been promoted to the leadership group at Liverpool following a summer of significant squad transition. The Hungary international has been named one of three vice-captains to skipper Virgil van Dijk by new head coach Andoni Iraola, serving alongside Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez.
Former Liverpool star Steve McManaman has insisted that Szoboszlai must now evolve into the central character both on and off the pitch. With the departures of dressing room stalwarts like Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, the team requires new leaders to step forward and maintain the club's high standards.
Dominik Szoboszlai is another one who is establishing himself in this team now. We've lost some big players over the last few years; big characters in the side, and so you need somebody to either come in or step up. That's what superstars do. Steve McManaman
McManaman emphasized that Szoboszlai, along with other senior figures, faces a crucial task in accelerating the development of the younger players currently within Iraola's squad. The transition period demands that these leaders bring through the next generation quickly to maintain the team's competitive edge.
Looking ahead, McManaman believes that securing a top-four finish and showing progress in domestic cup competitions would mark a successful first season for Iraola. The manager’s tactical system will rely heavily on Szoboszlai’s ability to control the tempo from midfield and provide stability as the squad continues its evolution.
