Shaka Hislop labels Aston Villa newcomer an 'absolute gem'
Former goalkeeper Shaka Hislop praises Zion Suzuki's move to Aston Villa and explains the tactical reasons behind David Raya's backup role for Spain.
Former Newcastle and West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has shared his insights on the Premier League's goalkeeping landscape, highlighting the arrival of Zion Suzuki at Aston Villa as a standout move. The 24-year-old Japan international was signed for a deal potentially worth £30 million following an impressive summer at the 2026 World Cup.
Speaking on the newcomer, Hislop said: "I will say I think Villa have found an absolute gem in Suzuki. I watched him closely during the World Cup this summer and I thought he was absolutely outstanding. Everything about his performances, his technique, I thought he was a complete goalkeeper."

Hislop also addressed the "odd" situation surrounding Arsenal custodian David Raya. Despite consistently winning the Golden Glove and performing at an elite level, Raya remains a backup for the Spanish national team.
According to Hislop, the preference for Unai Simon is purely tactical. The Spain manager Luis de la Fuente favors Simon’s aggressive style and his ability to play a high line, which complements the defensive structure better than what other options provide. While Raya is highly accomplished, Simon remains the preferred fit for Spain's specific system.
