São Paulo sign defensive midfielder Newton

São Paulo have officially announced the signing of defensive midfielder Newton. The player successfully passed his medical examinations at the club's training facility and signed a contract that will keep him with the team until the end of 2029.

Newton is recognized for his defensive attributes, specifically his ball-winning ability and protection of the defensive line. While he is not known for frequent offensive contributions, his intensity off the ball and capacity to recover possession have impressed the coaching staff. Under the system of Dorival Júnior, he is expected to operate primarily as a deep-lying midfielder.

Prior to joining the Tricolor, the midfielder's career included stints at several Brazilian clubs. He began his development in the youth ranks of Jacuipense before moving to Bahia de Feira, and subsequently to Botafogo, where he progressed from the youth setup to the squad that secured titles in the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian Championship. He also gained valuable experience during a loan spell at Criciúma.
