Sampdoria considering Mark van Bommel for managerial role
The Italian club is searching for a new head coach for a long-term project, with Mark van Bommel among the top candidates.
Genoa-based Sampdoria is searching for a new head coach to build a long-term development project. According to journalist Nicolo Schira, the Italian club has added well-known Dutch manager Mark van Bommel to its shortlist.
The 49-year-old has been without a club since 2024, following his departure from Belgian side Antwerp. During his time in Belgium, he secured a league title, establishing himself as a promising coach. He had previously been linked with a potential move to Scottish side Rangers.
In addition to van Bommel, the club is reportedly considering Spanish manager Julio Velazquez. Velazquez recently found success in Bulgaria, leading Levski to a league title, ending the long-standing dominance of Ludogorets.
Sampdoria finished the 2025/26 Serie B campaign in 13th place. While former player Attilio Lombardo managed the team during the final stretch of the season, the club's leadership is now looking for a permanent solution for the future.
