The arrest comes during a turbulent period in Sterling's career. Once a key figure in Manchester City's success under Pep Guardiola, the winger has struggled for form following moves to Chelsea and a loan spell at Arsenal. After his Chelsea contract was terminated in January, he joined Feyenoord on a short-term deal.
With his contract at the Dutch club set to expire this summer, Sterling is looking for a new chapter in his playing career. He must now manage the scrutiny of an ongoing police investigation while simultaneously searching for a club to continue his career.
