In a commanding 4-0 international friendly win over Bolivia, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni opted for a rare dual-striker setup, starting Julian Alvarez alongside Lautaro Martinez. This fixture marked the eleventh time the pair have spearheaded the attack together in the post-Messi era.
The tactical arrangement saw Martinez operating closer to the penalty area, while Alvarez dropped deeper to serve as a link player. The chemistry was evident early on, with Martinez scoring in the 18th minute—his 18th international goal, moving him to third on Argentina's all-time scoring list behind only Lionel Messi and Gabriel Batistuta.
Stats highlighted the complementary nature of their roles: Alvarez excelled in build-up play with an 85 percent pass accuracy in the final third, while Martinez maintained constant pressure on the Bolivian defense. Following the match, Scaloni addressed why this partnership is not a permanent fixture, citing the delicate balance required to maintain control against high-level opponents.
“There's a balance that can't be broken. When you have the ball, when you dominate, we think that balance is broken when they're on the pitch, but that doesn't mean it's always the case. Unfortunately, sometimes one of them hasn't played, and that's my responsibility,” explained Lionel Scaloni.
Scaloni views the presence of two world-class forwards as a valuable asset rather than a selection headache. As the team continues to refine its attacking fluidity, the staff is now turning its attention to the upcoming friendly against Burkina Faso.
